The Best Alternatives to Denim Shorts

Though nearly every trend changes from year to year, college women throughout time have agreed on one thing: denim shorts are a necessity in the spring and summer. Denim shorts are easy to pull on, match with almost everything, and feel super-relaxed — what’s not to love about them? However, wearing cut-offs for days on end can be tiresome; after all, there’s only so many ways a girl can style them before outfits begin to appear too similar. Lucky for you, this season there are plenty of alternatives that are more stylish but just as comfy as the beloved denim shorts!

Leatherette Shorts

Forever 21, $19.80

Leatherette shorts are the perfect option because they look like a tailored short, but feel much more comfortable and relaxed (and less stuffy), like the denim shorts you know and love. Leatherette shorts look super-cool dressed down with a vintage band tee and strappy sandals, but are also great for dressing up! Most leatherette shorts come in high-waist styles, which allow your favorite flowing blouses to be tucked in neatly. Not to mention, leatherette shorts look fierce with tights and chunky wedges for a night out. Let your hair and make-up reflect the sleek sheen of the leatherette short (think: a sleek pony and smokey eye).

Sequin Shorts

Although they appear bold, sequin shorts are actually extremely versatile. Because sequin shorts often feature neutral-colored sequins (e.g., golds, silvers, and blacks), they match pretty much anything a pair of denim cut-offs would. The key is to keep the rest of the ensemble muted and simple. While it’s still cold, knit sweaters/cardigans and simple ankle booties tone down sequin shorts. As it gets warmer, they can be paired with basic tee-shirts and tank tops; keep the ankle booties for an edgy vibe. Sequin shorts also look great with sheer, chiffon tops and blazers if the situation calls for something dressier.

Lace Shorts

Lace shorts are the perfect option for looking feminine while still keeping cool on a hot day, as well as a great way to incorporate this season’s pastel trend into your wardrobe. The mint pair pictured above, along with many other pastel options (such as pinks, light blues, and violets), look best with crisp, white blouses. Pair your lace shorts with a clean-looking button up top — chiffon or cotton-blend tops do not fit as stiffly as normal button-ups, embracing the feminine feel of the lace shorts. A leather sandal adds to the traditional, preppy look of this outfit, while a short boot makes it more unique and trendy.

Polka Dot Shorts

Simple and quirky, polka dots shorts will spice up an otherwise boring ensemble. If you choose a colorful pair of spotted shorts, pair them with a simple white or gray v-neck and a chambray shirt. A funky necklace and pair of street sneakers give this outfit exactly what it needs to look complete. If you’ve chosen a neutral color scheme for your shorts, they can be played up with brightly colored or graphic tees and tanks. A pair of polka dot shorts in a modest length and fit look super-classy with a pair of nude pumps and a flowing blouse for a dressy occasion (don’t forget the red lipstick and sparkling accessories)!
