Underwear. We’ve (hopefully) all got ‘em; we’ve gone through the phases; we’ve all got our favorite pairs that lasted or didn’t last, and we’ve certainly got our embarrassing stories.
In concert with Autostraddle’s Underwear Week, let’s talk.
Whether it’s a midrise lace edge that gives you a confidence boost under your leggings or a notorious Hugo Boss elastic band that peeks above your jeans, whether it’s Calvin Klein’s renowned microfiber (they’ve got the whole comfort thing down) or American Apparel’s staple unisex organic briefs (can you tell I’ve obsessed over underwear my whole life?), here are some grand options for your, as Autostraddle puts it aptly, “bum-hugging clothesthings”.
I love underwear. Here are some of my favorites (that I currently own and/or want and cannot afford, but someday my dream will come true and I will have an entire closet dedicated to these sexy essentials)!
1) Forever 21 Lace Trim Microfiber Boyshorts

Lace Trim Microfiber Boyshorts from Forever 21, $3.80, 3 for $9.50
I have three pairs of these in black. They’re absolutely amazing because the lace sits flat against your skin, the leg-hole elastics don’t dig into the middle of your bum, and they’re cheap. Victoria’s Secret is nice, yes, but at a third of the price these will do pretty fine as well.
2) Calvin Klein… anything.

CKU has amazing lingerie. The sheer comfort (I own two of their bras that make me question whether I’m actually wearing bras during the day, that’s how awesome they are) that come with these admittedly more expensive intimates is definitely to-die-for. They’ve also got amazing quality, so if you’ve got the money to spare, I suggest splurging on at least two pairs of these beauties.

3) American Apparel Unisex Organic Baby Rib Brief

Unisex Organic Baby Rib Brief from American Apparel, $14
Me gusta. I personally have a thing for boy-fit cotton comfort that women don’t really get to enjoy. We’ve got all these sheer itty-bitty triangles marketed to us, and if we want to lounge around in some simple underwear we have to deal with the whole pouch situation. Fear no more, because these feature a unisex design that gives you both the comfort and the fit. A bit on the expensive side, but isn’t all of American Apparel?
4) Urban Outfitters Swiss Dot Lace Mix Hipster

Swiss Dot Lace Mix Hipster from Urban Outfitters, $8, 4 for $19
Just because it’s lacy doesn’t mean it needs to be a thong. I love the berry ones especially because the color is red enough to be sexy but muted enough to fit with the whole I-just-pulled-these-delicious-things-on-a-whim hipster style. It’s cute and edgy at the same time, and it doesn’t have super-stretchy elastics that dig into your body, giving a smooth finish.
One thing that all of the above have in common is that they all cover my bum. Panty lines are annoying, yes (lace trims will fix that for you in a heartbeat if you’re not into thongs), but there’s nothing more frustrating than feeling your underthings fall inch by inch because they’re low-rise enough to barely be undies. College is a time to strut around in your underwear, so go out there, decorate your bum, and have fun!
