Rainy Day Essentials

“April showers bring May flowers” is a phrase you likely heard while dressing for a drizzly day as a child: you’d button your waterproof coat, slip on your galoshes, and be out the door — if only it were still this simple. Feeling confident and fierce and getting caught in a storm don’t go hand-in-hand for most university women. A demanding schedule and a never-ending to-do list may cause your style to take a backseat on sunny days, but when rain is added to the mix, you find yourself totally lost when it comes to making beauty and fashion selections. Spring and a stormy climate are one and the same, and the beginning of this season is no time to feel inept in your styling skills. Putting together a fabulous rainy day look is a craft any girl can master this upcoming season.

The Hair

Because a “boho braid” is already tousled, the storm will only add to its style.

Rainy days are practically synonymous with bad hair days. It frizzes, dampens, and just plain doesn’t behave–who has time to deal with all that? Don’t waste your time with heated tools, such as curling and straightening irons — it is more than likely that those styles will be ruined as soon as you step outside. Instead, an undone side braid will keep your tresses in line during a storm and look even better as rain and wind styles them through out the day (and you’ll save yourself from the damage that heat tools cause). Sparkling hair clips will also bring cheer to your rainy day ‘do. If you insist on wearing your hair down, positioning a thick head band at your hairline is an alternative to the side braid that still will keep your hair tame.

While creme and powdered make-up work like a charm on dry days, they are prone to streaking in the rain and humidity. Liquid make-up, once it has dried, will remain undisturbed throughout a rainy day. Liquid eyeliner and cover-up, whether you use drugstore or high-end products, is available in your favorite shades and by your favorite brands. Plus, will stay put better and longer than traditional cremes and powders. Creamy lipsticks and sleek glosses are also difficult to wear in the mist. Instead, try a lip stain. Lip stains work like crayons for your lips and the color really absorbs into the skin. For this reason, it will feel as if you aren’t wearing anything while having color that lasts all day (say “good-bye,” to smudging)! Lastly, avoid any make-up that isn’t necessary — sparkling and colorful eyeshadows are fun to wear, but if the weather unleashes its forces on your look, these products will only add to the mess.

The Outfit

Whether you need to be dolled-up or can look relaxed, picking out rainy day duds takes more thought and energy than it should. If you’re headed to work or are required to dress nicely for any other reason, a skater dress is the best option, as well as a major trend this season. Because they are made of cotton and flow away from the body, skater dresses are super-comfortable and are far from a chore to put on. Funky, patterned tights are the perfect accessory to wear with a solid color skater dress; if you’re rocking a patterned frock, traditional black stockings will guard your legs from the elements.

A casual rainy day calls for every girl’s favorite piece — leggings! While average, spandex leggings may collect dots when the rain hits them, rib knit leggings will camouflage the pesky spots. The rib knit will also add a unique spin to your ensamble. Finish the look with a fun camisole and denim jacket. If it’s chilly, a scarf is a stylish way to add warmth — be sure to choose a silk style; a knit scarf paired with knit leggings is overkill!

Both the dressy and casual outfit are best worn with flats. Boots may seem like a good option, too, but the slick material of their soles makes them ultra-slippery in wet weather. Of course, heels are a major “no” in the rain. Flats are available in an endless variety of styles and colors, so it is important to find a pair that works with both your personal taste and comfort needs. Smoking slippers, a type of flat popular during the 1950′s, have made a major comeback this past winter and are a perfect transition piece for the Spring.
