To give you an idea of the scenery. Temperatures average around 90 degrees Fahrenheit every day.
So I’ve been on hiatus from you all for a while. Full disclosure: I’m in Italy performing three roles in two operas and have been just a tad bit busy. However, the fashion here in Siena is seriously amazing, and I figure you might want some information on how to stay cool in seriously hot temperatures – without air conditioning, I might add. So, here are three outfit ideas that I find great for staying cool in sweltering heat. Trust me, I’ve test run every option below!
1) Long does not equal hot
One thing I find counter-intuitive is that long skirts, and even breezy long sleeved cotton tops, sometimes keep me cooler than, say, a mini and a tank top. Bonus points for keeping relatively conservative in a country filled with churches and historic sites!
2) Neutrals. Seriously, neutrals.
Ladies in Siena (from what I’ve seen so far) really rely on well-constructed neutral colored garments as the basis of their wardrobe. It’s like starting off building a house with a solid foundation–anything can be added on top to make it more exciting. But fundamentally, natural fibers in muted tones are the way to go; once you’ve got that, feel free to add all the bold pops you want. I saw a friend in my program wearing an outfit similar to this one, and she looked so incredibly chic. Bella Bella Bella.
3) Running up and down
I learned today that, yes, my strappy sandal slingbacks can survive cobblestones without causing any ankle fractures; however, heels are definitely best used sparingly. I also learned that one can layer tops with defined waists over pencil skirts, instead of having to tuck in a blouse.
